Kajiado residents demand more education funding, disability-friendly schools in 2026/27 budget

Residents of Kajiado County have urged Parliament to increase funding for education and improve learning infrastructure during a public participation session on the National Government Budget Estimates for the 2026/2027 Financial Year.

The session, organised by the National Assembly Committee on Budget and Appropriations, was chaired by Babu Owino, the MP for Embakasi East.

Residents from across the county participated in the deliberations, which focused heavily on education.

During the forum, participants highlighted key challenges facing public schools, including inadequate learning infrastructure, a shortage of teachers, and the lack of inclusive facilities for learners with disabilities.

The residents stated that many schools are not disability-friendly and that there are not enough teachers, especially those trained to handle learners with special needs.

Residents also raised concerns over poor road networks leading to schools, particularly in Rongai and neighbouring areas. They noted that impassable roads during the rainy season make it difficult for learners to access schools.

“We do not have roads leading to public schools in Rongai, and this continues to affect learners and parents,” one resident said.

Beyond education, residents called for improvements in electricity connectivity, security infrastructure, and youth empowerment programmes.

Young people urged the government to invest in schools, ICT hubs, and skills development centres to tackle unemployment and create digital opportunities.

Electricity access also emerged as a major concern, with many households and centres relying heavily on solar power. Residents called for the expansion of the national grid to support businesses, schools, and health facilities.

Farmers and dairy cooperatives further appealed for the establishment of milk cooling plants to reduce post-harvest losses and improve earnings.

Chairing the session, Owino assured residents that their submissions would be considered in the budget-making process.

He emphasised that public participation is a key constitutional pillar in ensuring equitable allocation of national resources and responsive development planning.
