The long-awaited unveiling of Kabarnet University has rekindled hope among residents and leaders in Baringo County, with many expressing optimism that the institution will transform education and economic growth in the region.
Baringo County Assembly Speaker Vincent Kemboi said the university will give students from the region easier access to higher education and reduce the financial burden faced by families forced to send children to distant universities.
“This institution will open opportunities for many young people who have been unable to pursue university education because of distance and high costs,” he said.
Kabarnet business community chairman David Kiprono noted that the institution is expected to stimulate economic activities in the town through increased demand for housing, transport, and other services.
“We are expecting growth in businesses once students and staff begin settling here. This will greatly benefit local traders,” he said.
Education stakeholders observed that the university could help improve university transition rates in the North Rift region and provide a platform for research and innovation.
Baringo education officer Jane Chebet said the project is a major milestone for the county’s education sector.
“For years, students from this region have struggled to access higher learning institutions. This project gives hope to many families,” she said.

Leaders also renewed calls for equitable distribution of higher education institutions, saying marginalised regions deserve equal access to public universities and learning facilities.
The unveiling of the university comes after years of delays and consultations, with residents now expressing optimism that the institution will finally begin operations and position Baringo as an emerging education hub.
