Teachers in Laikipia under the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) are demanding increased transparency and accountability in the management of the Burial Benevolent Fund (BBF), with Junior School (JS) Secretary Jared Kanyimbo leading the call for reforms.

In a statement addressed to all teachers in the county, Kanyimbo emphasized that the BBF, being public money contributed by members, must be handled with utmost integrity and openness.

He called for the immediate establishment of the fund committee to enhance inclusivity and bridge any gaps between union officials and members.

Kanyimbo proposed that each sub-county nominate one representative to the committee, ensuring balanced representation between JSS and senior school teachers.

The committee, he noted, would oversee BBF cases and coordinate the use of union resources such as tents and the union bus in welfare-related activities.

“Tabulations concerning BBF money must be anchored on money in,” Kanyimbo stated, urging KUPPET branch signatories to publicly disclose the exact monthly contributions received based on total membership.

He added that clear records of expenditure, balances, and any deficits should be provided to members every month.

The unionist further called for the introduction of routine monthly BBF reports detailing all funds received and spent, alongside specific cases supported during the period.

According to Kanyimbo, such measures will strengthen trust and accountability within the union.

As part of the way forward, Kanyimbo urged the Laikipia KUPPET branch to adopt a digital system that would allow members to access BBF services and financial records in real time.

The platform, he said, should display monthly inflows, outflows, and balances, while also giving members an opportunity to propose development projects funded through surplus contributions.

He also stressed that all BBF transactions must be conducted through the official Laikipia KUPPET branch account to ensure proper oversight and financial discipline.

The proposals signal growing pressure from teachers for reforms in union fund management, as members seek greater involvement and assurance that their contributions are being used effectively and transparently.
