From AFCON to the Mashemeji Derby: Meet the referee who teaches pure mathematics at University

Kenyan referee Peter Kamaku Waweru takes charge during the Mashemeji Derby as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards battle for possession at Nyayo National Stadium.

Sunday’s high-stakes Kenya Premier League tie dubbed as ‘Mashemeji Derby’ clash between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards at Nyayo National Stadium, once again lived up to its billing as one of the fiercest rivalries in Kenyan football.

But beyond the noise, passion and intensity on the pitch, one figure stood out for reasons that go far beyond the game itself.

At the centre was Peter Kamaku Waweru—a man who seamlessly blends two demanding worlds: top-level football officiating and high-level academia.

At 43, Prof. Waweru is not only among the most respected referees in the Kenyan Premier League, but also a full professor of Pure Mathematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). His presence at such a high-profile match highlights a remarkable journey defined by discipline, consistency and excellence.

Peter Waweru officiates the AFCON 2025 match between South Africa and Cameroon.

Waweru began officiating in the Kenyan Premier League in 2013, steadily building his reputation as a fair, firm, and composed referee. His dedication and professionalism earned him international recognition in 2017, when he was listed by FIFA as an accredited referee. This milestone opened doors for him to officiate beyond Kenya, placing him among the elite referees on the global stage.

Away from the pitch, Prof. Waweru’s achievements are equally impressive. A proud alumnus of Alliance High School, he has carved out a distinguished academic career in mathematics. As a lecturer, researcher and mentor, he continues to shape young minds while contributing to the advancement of knowledge in his field.

Balancing the demands of academia and elite sport is no easy feat. Yet, Waweru manages both with precision—mirroring the clarity and decisiveness he brings to the field of play.

His role in the Mashemeji Derby sends a powerful message to young Kenyans: one does not have to choose between education and passion. With discipline and focus, it is possible to excel in both.

As Kenyan football continues to evolve, individuals like Prof. Waweru embody the values of integrity, intellect and professionalism—qualities that inspire a new generation to dream bigger and aim higher, both in sports and in life.
