Nzioka Waita mourns Prof. Raphael Munavu, says Kenya has lost a builder and a thinker

The late Prof Raphael Munavu, a distinguished education leader, scholar, and reform architect in Kenya.

Former Machakos County gubernatorial candidate Nzioka Waita has joined the nation in mourning the death of education icon Professor Raphael Munavu, describing him as “a giant of Kenya’s education system.”

In a statement released Sunday, Waita, MGH, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Prof. Munavu, OGW, EBS, whose career spanned decades at the highest levels of education leadership.

“I am saddened by the passing of Professor Raphael Munavu,” Waita said. “Professor Munavu was a giant of Kenya’s education system. As Vice-Chancellor of Moi University, Chairman of KNEC, and most recently Chair of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, he gave his life to the service of this nation and its people.”

Prof. Munavu’s influence shaped key institutions and policies that define Kenya’s learning landscape today. From university lecture halls to the national examination council and the recent sweeping education reforms, his fingerprints remain on generations of learners.

“Kenya has lost a builder and a thinker. Masaku has lost one of its great sons, and the people of Kangundo have lost a father figure to many,” Waita added. “His legacy will endure in every institution he touched and every student he shaped.”

The former gubernatorial contestant extended his condolences to the professor’s family and loved ones.

“To his family and loved ones, my deepest condolences. May he rest in peace,” he said.

Prof. Munavu hailed from Kangundo in Machakos County, where he was regarded as a mentor and pillar of the community.
