Northlands International Medical Training College (NIMTC) sign post. NCK has flagged it unapproved nursing courses

The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) has publicly flagged Northlands International Medical Training College (NIMTC), accusing the Kisumu-based institution of purporting to offer nursing courses without the required regulatory approval, triggering a sharp response from the college’s management.

In a notice dated April 20, 2026, NCK named NIMTC as an institution allegedly offering nursing programmes outside the council’s approval framework.

The council, which describes itself as the sole authority responsible for approving nursing and midwifery training programmes in Kenya, warned that any course offered without its approval is not recognised and does not meet the required standards of training and professional practice.

NCK also cautioned that Nurse Aid or Nursing Assistant training is not a recognised programme under its regulatory mandate, urging prospective students and their guardians to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling.

“We urge prospective students and their guardians to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling in any nursing or midwifery programme,” the council stated, directing the public to its official website, www.nckenya.com, for a list of approved institutions as of April 20, 2026.

NIMTC responded with an official press statement dated April 22, 2026, signed by Acting Managing Director Ochieng Awendo. The college categorically denied any involvement in nursing training, stating that it does not have a formal association with NCK and is not involved in the training, admission, or offering of any nursing programme.

The college instead clarified that the programme at the centre of the dispute is offered under the name Patient Management (Patient Assistant), informally referred to by the public as Nurse Aid or Nursing Assistant, and is registered with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) under Registration Number TVETA/PRIVATE/TVC/0092/2025 as a Homecare Management course. NIMTC further stated that the programme does not fall under NCK’s regulatory scope.

“The operations of the College continue uninterrupted, as the programme in question is not part of our current academic offerings,” the statement said.

NIMTC also disclosed that it is accredited by the Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC) as an assessment centre and reiterated its commitment to engaging with relevant authorities to ensure compliance and alignment on all matters concerning accreditation and programme offerings.

NCK’s public notice comes as the council intensifies efforts to protect the integrity of nursing and midwifery training in Kenya amid a growing number of private institutions offering health-related programmes. The council maintains that members of the public should rely on its website for verified information on approved training institutions.
