Teachers in Kisii, Nyamira congratulate Obwocha on election as KUPPET National Secretary for secondary schools

Teachers and school leaders in Kisii and Nyamira celebrate Edward Obwocha’s election as KUPPET National Secretary for Secondary Schools.

The teaching fraternity in Nyamira and Kisii counties has congratulated Edward Obwocha following his recent election as the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Secretary for Secondary Schools.

Speaking in Nyamira town, secondary school principals termed the election a timely win for both Obwocha and the region, saying his elevation strengthens Gusii representation at the national level of the union.

Obwocha clinched the seat during KUPPET’s National Delegates Conference held on 12th April, 2026 at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi. The exercise was overseen by officials from the Ministry of Labour and the Registrar of Trade Unions.

He garnered 1,284 votes against 973 for his closest challenger, Daniel Kiptoo of Uasin Gishu, and 412 for third-place candidate Mary Wafula of Bungoma. A total of 2,720 delegates drawn from all 47 counties participated in the secret ballot.

The post of National Secretary for Secondary Schools fell vacant in January 2026 after the former office holder, Julius Korir, retired upon attaining the mandatory age. Campaigns for the seat ran for three months, with candidates touring branches to present their manifestos on teachers’ welfare, CBC implementation, and promotion policies.

In his acceptance speech, Obwocha pledged to push for timely promotions, harmonisation of allowances, and better medical cover for secondary school teachers. He also promised to decentralise union services to improve access for teachers in rural sub-counties.

Nyamira KUPPET Executive Secretary Samuel Morara said Obwocha’s experience as former Kisii County branch chairman and his 22-year teaching career positioned him well to articulate teachers’ issues at the national table.

“We expect him to champion the employment of more teachers to ease the current staffing crisis and to fast-track the new CBA negotiations,” said Keroka Girls Principal Jane Ombati, who spoke on behalf of principals.

Obwocha will serve a five-year term ending April 2031, alongside other national officials elected during the same conference.
