From a military officer, pilot to Alliance High Principal: Meet Christopher Khaemba, a man of many hats

Christopher Khaemba is a distinguished Kenyan educationist best known for his transformative leadership at Alliance High School and for co-founding the Nova Pioneer Group of Schools.

Born on January 18, 1960, in Bungoma County, Khaemba began his professional journey in an unexpected field.

He first served as an officer and pilot in the Kenya Air Force before leaving the military following the 1982 attempted coup.

He later transitioned into education, training as a Diploma science teacher at the Kenya Science Teachers College and earning an MBA in Strategic Management from Kenyatta University.

Khaemba joined Alliance High School as a Physics and Mathematics teacher, serving for 14 years before his appointment as principal of Friends School Kamusinga in 1995.

Three years later, he returned to Alliance High School as principal, a position he held for a decade. During his tenure, the school consistently ranked among the top performers in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

His influence later extended beyond secondary education.

In 2008, he became the founding Dean and Ambassador-at-Large of the African Leadership Academy in South Africa.

He also served as general manager for the Education Pillar at Equity Group Foundation and as Special Advisor on Education to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In 2013, Khaemba joined the Teachers Service Commission as Deputy Director – Teacher Management before taking up executive roles at Nairobi City County, overseeing Education, Youth, Sports, Social Services and later Urban Planning and Lands.

In 2015, alongside Oliver Rothschild, Oliver Sabot, and Chinexi Chijioke, Khaemba co-founded Nova Pioneer.

Inspired by the African Leadership Academy model, the institution combines academic excellence with leadership development.

Since opening its first campus in 2016, Nova Pioneer has expanded across Kenya and South Africa, becoming one of the region’s prominent private school networks.

Beyond expansion, Nova Pioneer is known for its learner-centered approach, emphasizing critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and technology integration in line with modern global education trends.

The schools continue to grow with campuses such as Tatu City becoming flagship institutions attracting students from diverse backgrounds.

Khaemba is widely regarded as a pioneer in rethinking African education systems, shifting focus from traditional rote learning to competency-based, leadership-oriented education.

His work has inspired a generation of educators and continues to shape conversations on education reform across the continent.
