As the April holiday begins, parents and guardians from Narok County are being urged to take an active role in guiding and monitoring their children to ensure a safe and productive break.

The authorities and community leaders have emphasized the importance of keeping children engaged in positive activities that contribute to their personal growth and development.

Moses ole Kiyiapi, a youthful leader and advocate for youth empowerment in Narok County, called on parents to be vigilant during the holiday period.

“Holidays provide a critical opportunity for our children to learn, grow and develop good habits. Parents must actively supervise their children, guide them in making the right choices, and encourage activities that are educational, creative and constructive,” he said.

The April holiday, which typically spans school breaks in Kenya, often sees a surge in unsupervised youth activities.

Reports in previous years have shown that lack of proper guidance during school holidays can lead to negative behaviours, including idleness and exposure to unsafe environments.

Therefore, is need for some concerted efforts to collaborate in creating a structured holiday schedule for children.

Kiyiapi also highlighted the role of mentorship and community involvement. He encouraged youth to participate in sports, arts, volunteer activities and educational programmes during the holiday.

“Engaging our youth in meaningful activities not only keeps them safe but also builds their character and skills for the future. Let us use this holiday as an opportunity to nurture the next generation,” he emphasized.

He advised to balance relaxation and recreation with learning opportunities. Activities such as reading, community service, gardening and cultural projects are recommended.

Kiyiapi also encouraged them to engage in open discussions with children about safety, personal responsibility, and decision-making.

The message from youth leaders and educators is clear: holidays should be a period of positive growth, not idle time.

Moses ole Kiyiapi added: “It takes a community to raise a child. During this April holiday, let’s all commit to guiding, protecting and inspiring our youth to make every day meaningful.”
