One day after the residents of Kenyenya appealed to Kisii County Governor Simba Arati to intervene and reopen Kenyenya Health Centre, the Governor swung into action.
The health centre was closed following a fracas between the staff and irate residents over the death of an expectant mother and her newborn child, allegedly due to neglect by nurses.
The Governor, speaking at Kenyenya Stadium, condemned the vandalism and looting of the facility, saying that seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the unrest.
He promised that, if found guilty, they would be made to pay for all the damage caused.
“Normalcy has returned to the hospital, and all damaged equipment has been replaced,” he assured the public.
Governor Arati regretted that the hospital’s temporary closure forced many students and teachers in the vicinity to travel long distances to seek basic treatment.
He blamed the public for taking the law into their own hands rather than following the proper channels to have their grievances heard.
“We understand your concerns, but we must work together to ensure the hospital serves the community effectively,” he said.

The Governor highlighted the health and education development projects his government has implemented and urged residents to remain optimistic and peaceful to facilitate service delivery.
The Executive Secretary, Ronald Nyakweba, flanked him at the County Assembly, who promised to mobilise the medical staff and the public to work harmoniously for rapid development.
