Mukumu Primary School has a reason to smile following improvements in infrastructure, which had been in a deplorable state for decades.
This is after the deployment of the headteacher, Victor Ingosi, in the year 2024, who recounted that when he reported to the school for the first time, he was perplexed when his predecessor took him round: “I thought the school had set high standards of infrastructure development just like the Mukumu community schools.” He exclaimed
The headteacher was speaking during a Thanksgiving mass presided over by the Kakamega County Catholic Diocese Bishop Joseph Obanyi, who was invited to the school for the first time since its inception.
Ingosi revealed that when County Directors of Education carried out a countrywide inspection of boarding facilities in schools, Mumias Boys Primary was not an exception.
The Kakamega County Director by that time was Hellen Nyang’au, who visited the school with the other sub-county director and demanded an immediate closure of the school, since the boys were sleeping in classrooms that were in a pathetic state.

“I told the director with due respect that if we close the boarding section, parents will come after me, alleging that I have shut down the school,” Ingosi stated.
To revamp the school, the Board of Management (BOM) was brought on board, together with brothers, as the school is sponsored by the Catholic church “We can’t just see the school collapsing, we must do something,” Ingosi said.
Through his commitments, he rehabilitated classrooms and converted them into dormitories, which necessitated the school’s status as a boarding, day primary, and Junior Secondary School (JSS).

He commended Bishop Obanyi for his wonderful gesture at the school, and during the inspection, he was convinced by the parents’ commitment to funding school development projects.
Bishop pledged to support the school in offering a conducive learning environment.
