The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has issued a stern demand to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to immediately absorb 44,000 intern teachers into permanent and pensionable positions, following a Court of Appeal ruling that declared the internship program unconstitutional.

In a statement, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori emphasized that the ruling renders the employment status of intern teachers legally untenable, leaving them without a framework to govern their employment.

The union is urging the teachers employer to comply with the court ruling and regularize the teachers’ employment terms without delay.

The KUPPET National Chariman Omboko Milemba echoing the union stand urged the TSC to seek funds from Parliament to employ interns on permanent and pensionable terms without failure.

The appellate court had upheld an earlier judgment that found the internship program to be discriminatory, with intern teachers performing equivalent duties to permanently employed teachers but receiving lower remuneration and limited benefits.

The TSC now faces pressure to address the situation, with options limited to terminating contracts or seeking funding to employ the interns
