Eregi Teachers Training College has been crowned the overall champions in the just concluded Western Intercollege Ball Games that kicked off on Wednesday at Lugari Diploma Teachers Training College.

The event brought together nine teachers’ training colleges from the Western region participated in the 2026 championship.

The institutions included Kibabii Diploma Teachers Training College, Kaimosi Teachers Training College, Eregi Teachers Training College, Bunyore Teachers Training College, Bondo Teachers Training College, Seme Teachers Training College, Ugenya Teachers Training College, Lugari Teachers Training College and Nabongo Teachers Training College.

The colourful event served fans to a thrilling games as all the participating colleges field teams in various disciplines including soccer, volleyball and handball for both men and women categories.

Lugari Teachers Training College, the host college received accolades for the successful organization of the event.

The college principal, Anne Esese, was commended for the effective measures her institution put in place to ensure the tournament ran smoothly.

At the end of the championship, Eregi Teachers Training College emerged the overall champions with 104 points, followed by Kaimosi Teachers Training College in second place with 88 points, while Bondo Teachers Training College finished third overall with 67 points.

Kaimosi Teachers Training College – 41 points.

According to sports pundits, the diploma colleges of Lugari Teachers Training College and Kibabii Diploma Teachers Training College performed below expectations largely due to their relatively smaller student populations compared to institutions such as Eregi, Kaimosi and Bondo, which have larger talent pools.

The best teams will now represent the Western Region at the upcoming national championships scheduled to be held at Asumbi Teachers Training College.

Students from across the participating colleges expressed excitement at the opportunity to interact and make new friends from different institutions across the region.

The teams advancing to the national stage now carry the hopes and aspirations of the Western Region as they prepare to compete at a higher level.

Sports activities in colleges play a critical role in boosting students’ physical health and fitness, fostering teamwork and leadership skills, providing networking opportunities and promoting institutional spirit.

Sports fanatics were treated to thrilling matches, particularly in soccer, where colleges displayed highly competitive performances.
