The government has finally released Ksh 4 Billion to hospitals to pay claims covering December 2025–February 2026 for teachers’ medical cover.

This was revealed by Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga Executive Secretary Charles Otiende in a press statement released yesterday.

“Ksh4 billion has been released today to hospitals to pay claims covering December 2025–February 2026. SHA will publish and correctly inform hospitals of benefits due to teachers under the Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover, PHC, and SHIF.

The statement further stated that TSC and SHA will activate a portal to facilitate prompt and seamless claim and payment of last expense.

It added that Group life cover and WIBA will be operationalized through budgetary support from Treasury. “Challenges in the cover will be channeled through a dedicated toll-free number 0800 720 601. TSC will formalize the process for ex-gratia claims which SHA will pay, and facilities offering specialized services will be accredited immediately,” the statement read.

This comes after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale convened a meeting bringing together, SHA, TSC and KUPPET official to deliberate on the concerns raised on the teachers’ medical cover.

In a major boost to the health sector, the Ksh4 billion payment to hospitals is expected to ease financial strain on medical facilities and ensure uninterrupted treatment for teachers under the scheme.

During the meeting, SHA committed to clearly outline and publish the distinction between benefits under the Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover, Primary Health Care (PHC), and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). This clarification aims to guide hospitals and beneficiaries on the scope of coverage and entitlements.

The TSC and SHA also agreed to activate a dedicated digital portal to facilitate faster processing and payment of last expense claims, providing relief to families of deceased teachers.

Additionally, TSC and the Ministry of Health will seek budgetary support from the National Treasury to operationalize the Group Life Cover and Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA), which have faced implementation challenges due to funding gaps.

Teachers encountering challenges with the scheme can now channel their complaints through a dedicated toll-free number, 0800 720 601, set up specifically to address their concerns.

The meeting further resolved that hospitals offering specialized services such as IVF, oncology, dental care, and overseas treatment will be accredited immediately to expand access.

Union officials said the resolutions mark a significant step toward restoring confidence in the teachers’ medical cover and urged members to stay informed as implementation progresses.
