Celebrations rocked the teaching fraternity in Murang’a after youthful leadership was injected into the KUPPET.

During the heavily contested branch election, the team led by Thomas Waweru Kimani swept all positions, defeating the incumbent led by Mburu Mwangi.

During the campaign period, the majority of candidates withdrew their candidacies in support of the orator and teacher’s right defender, Saalim Suleiman Mwachizo, for the chairmanship.

The treasurer’s position was elected to Muiga Harrison.

The elections were held at Gikuu Secondary school, where some teachers were blocked from participating after their names went missing from the register, but were later allowed to cast their votes.

Below is a list of other elected leaders.

Position Winner
Chairperson Thomas Waweru Kimani
Treasurer Muiga Harrison
Assistant Executive Secretary Michael Murigi
Vice Chairperson Harrison Muiga

Third Gender Representative (Youth Rep) Daniel Njaramba

The branch election was halted last month by a court order after a member, Davis Nyamweya Omosa, moved to court and sued the teacher union and the Secretary General, Akello Misori, demanding that he be supplied with a members register to be used in the election.

Kimani, in his acceptance speech, said he would ensure the interests of teachers are addressed in line with his manifesto.

“The leadership in the branch will ensure the issues about the teachers are prioritised for fairness,” said Kimani.

On February 17, after the matter was concluded in court, the union secretary general ordered the election to be held on February 21
