Children’s Officer Margaret Maloa urges parents at Tala SA Primary School in Matungulu Sub-County, Machakos County, urging them to be mindful of their conduct and language at home as children often imitate what they observe.

Parents in Matungulu Sub-County, Machakos County, have been urged to be more careful about what they discuss and how they conduct themselves in the presence of their children.

Speaking during a parents’ meeting at Tala SA Primary School, Children’s Officer Margaret Maloa warned that many children pick up habits, both good and badby closely observing and copying their parents’ words and actions at home.

Maloa noted that some parents often assume their children are still too young to understand what is happening around them and, as a result, speak or behave carelessly in front of them.

However, she cautioned that children are keen observers and tend to imitate what they see and hear from adults, especially their parents.

“They are not as young as you think. Be very careful about your conduct when in their presence. Many of the bad habits reported in schools are copied from home,” she said.

She added that issues such as indiscipline, the use of abusive language, and disrespectful behaviour among learners can often be traced back to what learners are exposed to at home.

According to her, parents play a critical role in shaping their children’s character and values, and should therefore strive to set a good example at all times.

The children’s officer called on parents to create a positive home environment by practising respectful communication, responsible behaviour, and good morals, noting that this would go a long way in improving discipline and overall conduct in schools.

“Learning begins at home, and every parent should be aware that the kids are watching. Be positive in your words and actions,” she noted.
