Celebrations erupt at Bomet University after Charter Award

Celebrations are ongoing at Bomet University following the award of a full university charter by President William Samoei Ruto.

The celebrations come just a day after President Ruto conferred the charter during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi, formally recognizing Bomet University as the 36th public chartered university in Kenya.

University staff, students, and local residents poured into the campus grounds waving banners and singing songs of victory, marking what many described as a historic moment for the region.

“This charter is a dream come true for Bomet University and the entire South Rift region,” said Vice-Chancellor Prof. Charles Mutai. “It affirms the hard work, resilience, and steady growth we have achieved since our establishment. We are now better positioned to expand our academic programmes, research output, and community engagement.”

This milestone officially elevates the institution to a fully fledged public university.

Originally established in 2017 as a constituent college of Moi University, Bomet University has experienced rapid growth over the years. The institution currently serves 8,777 students, spread across its Main Campus in Bomet Town and a Satellite Campus in Sigor.

Students welcomed the news with excitement, saying the charter would enhance the value of their degrees and improve learning facilities.

“This is a proud moment for us as students,” said third-year student Janet Chepngeno. “Being in a fully chartered university gives us confidence that our qualifications will be recognized globally. We expect better facilities, more courses, and increased opportunities.”

Local leaders and residents also hailed the development, noting that it resolves the long-standing location debate that emerged in 2015 and brings clarity and stability to the institution’s future.

“The charter finally settles the uncertainty that surrounded the university’s location,” said Bomet County education stakeholder Kiprono Langat. “This decision benefits not only students but also the local economy through job creation and infrastructure development.”

As celebrations continue on campus, there is a strong sense of pride and optimism, with stakeholders expressing hope that Bomet University will play a greater role in advancing higher education, innovation, and socio-economic development in Kenya.
