Former Chief Justice David Maraga has blamed rampant corruption for crippling Kenya’s education sector, saying mismanaged public funds and allocations to ghost institutions continue to deny learners quality services.
Maraga, who is seeking the presidency under the United Green Movement (UGM) in the 2027 General Election, said dishonest officials have been diverting money meant for schools and hospitals, weakening critical public systems.
He spoke during a voter civic registration mobilization drive in Kinango Sub-county, Kwale County.
His remarks come at a time when schools are grappling with delayed capitation, confusion surrounding the transition of Grade 10 learners, and thousands of students failing to report to class due to lack of fees despite the government’s directive that all children must be admitted.

Maraga noted that the growing culture of graft has derailed national development and exposed the country to further economic strain.
“Kenya is rich, but poor governance and corruption are dragging the nation backwards. I want to end the theft of public resources,” he said.
He further promised to strengthen the education system and healthcare, ease access to equal education opportunities and maternal care if elected as the President in 2027.
