Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Bungoma County have staged demonstrations outside Governor Ken Lusaka’s offices, demanding promotions, payment of salary arrears, and a regulated salary structure.
The teachers, led by representatives Martin Wamalwa, Zipia Wekati, and Alex Chemning’oni, accused the county government of failing to streamline their employment terms. They urged Governor Lusaka, in liaison with the Bungoma County Public Service Board and the County Assembly, to allocate them to proper job groups and issue confirmation letters, saying they have been working without formal documentation.

The teachers also demanded gratuity remittances and settlement of 10 months’ salary arrears owed to those first employed on contractual terms. They argued that the lack of a clear payslip structure has left them financially insecure and demoralized.

Beyond pay and promotions, the ECDE tutors decried poor working conditions, citing inadequate learning and instructional materials for pupils. They said the shortage of resources has undermined their ability to deliver quality education and has contributed to low morale among staff.
According to the protesting teachers, repeated promises by the county government have not been fulfilled, leaving them frustrated. They insisted that only firm action and a structured employment framework would resolve their grievances and ensure a motivated workforce.
