Kakamega School clinch Maseno Opens rugby title after narrow win over Bungoma High

Kakamega School were crowned champions of the 2026 Maseno School Opens Rugby Fifteens Tournament after edging out Bungoma High School 7–5 in a tightly contested final played at Maseno School.

The Western Kenya giants sealed the title following a disciplined and resilient performance, capping off an impressive run that saw them overcome several strong opponents en route to the final. The narrow victory underscored Kakamega School’s tactical maturity and defensive solidity in high-pressure moments.

The tournament opened with a series of competitive fixtures on day one, highlighting the depth of school rugby in the region. Hosts Maseno School fell 21–20 to Butere Boys in an early upset, while Bungoma High edged St. Mary’s Yala 8–6 in a closely fought encounter. Kakamega School announced their intentions with a commanding 58–0 win over Bondo Township, one of the biggest margins of the tournament.

Other notable results included Bwake Boys’ 26–0 victory over Chianda School, Kaolel Boys’ dominant 34–0 win against Chemil High School, and Bungoma High’s disciplined 13–0 triumph over Bwake Boys. Kakamega School also recorded a hard-fought 5–0 win over Butere Boys, further strengthening their credentials as title contenders.

In the knockout stages, Bungoma High continued their steady progress with a convincing 13–0 semifinal victory over Bwake Boys, displaying defensive organisation and clinical finishing. Kakamega School, on the other hand, produced one of their best performances of the tournament in the semifinals, overpowering Koelel Forces Academy 34–3 to book a place in the final.

The final lived up to expectations, with both Kakamega School and Bungoma High showing composure and tactical awareness. Kakamega School struck first and defended resolutely as Bungoma High pushed for a late comeback. The 7–5 scoreline reflected the intensity of the contest, with small margins ultimately deciding the outcome.

The Maseno School Opens Rugby Fifteens Tournament once again proved to be a key platform for nurturing young rugby talent, drawing competitive teams from across the region and delivering high-quality action throughout. Kakamega School’s triumph not only adds another trophy to their rich rugby history but also reaffirms their status as one of the leading school rugby powerhouses in the country.
