A tragic accident near City Primary School in Nairobi has left several teachers feared dead and others injured after a matatu lost control and rammed into pedestrians gathered for the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nairobi Branch elections.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle, which was being driven from Limuru Road towards Murang’a Road, lost its brakes near Jamhuri Primary School gate. It veered off to the left, crashed into roadside guard rails, and overturned, striking teachers who had gathered for the elections.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as the vehicle ploughed into the crowd, disrupting the ongoing union elections. Police have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident, with brake failure cited as the likely reason.

Following the incident, Charles Otiende, Executive Secretary of KUPPET Vihiga Branch, conveyed his condolences to the Nairobi branch and the wider teaching community.

“I have received the sad news of the passing on of several colleagues from Nairobi KUPPET Branch after being rammed in by a speeding matatu. It is even more saddening that the deceased were in the course of exercising their democratic rights of electing their representatives. I call upon all of us to keep the affected families in our thoughts and prayers,” Otiende said in a social media post
