Caxton Miungi has secured a fresh mandate as the Meru Central Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) branch executive secretary following a hotly contested election at Gikumene Primary School in Meru Town. The vote drew a large turnout of teachers and ran late into the night, where Miungi faced three challengers.
Candidates allied to Miungi captured most branch positions, prompting celebrations as results were announced. Nathan Ikinyira was elected unopposed as branch chairman, with Alex Mwiti taking the vice chair post. John Paul Mwiti clinched the assistant executive secretary seat, while Edward Kirimi was returned unopposed as treasurer.
Misheck Gatonge sailed through unopposed as assistant treasurer. Kellen Kagwiria won the Women Representative position, and Lillian Makena Riungu was elected as the representative for persons with disabilities (PWD).

In his acceptance speech, Miungi thanked teachers for turning out in large numbers and pledged to prioritize welfare and problem‑solving for members. He said the outcome reflected respect for the KNUT constitution and a focus on service delivery over age considerations. “Meru teachers have shown they are interested in service delivery and not the age of the candidate,” he said, promising to address teachers’ concerns with urgency.
Miungi added that the branch will work closely with the KNUT national office to ensure full implementation of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the Teachers Service Commission within two to three years. He emphasized collaboration with newly elected officials and support for national leadership to maximize benefits for members.
