Girls outnumber boys in KCSE 2025 for second consecutive year

Female candidates outnumbered their male counterparts in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations for the second consecutive year, CS Ogamba has revealed.

Of the 993,226 candidates who sat the 2025 KCSE examinations, 501,214 were female while 492,012 were male, representing 50.46 per cent and 49.54 per cent of the total candidature respectively.

Fourteen counties registered a significantly higher number of female candidates, among them Vihiga, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kisumu, Kiambu, Kwale, Nairobi, Kakamega, Meru, Isiolo, Uasin Gishu, Machakos, Kitui, Busia and Tharaka Nithi.

Despite the national trend, ten counties recorded a higher number of male candidates than female candidates. These included Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Turkana, Narok, Samburu, Mombasa, Homa Bay, Nyamira and West Pokot, with Garissa and Mandera posting the widest gender gaps in favour of boys.

A further 23 counties recorded near gender parity, including Lamu, Marsabit, Embu, Tana River, Laikipia, Kisii, Baringo, Migori, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Kajiado, Kericho, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Bungoma and Makueni.
