Joseph Okisai, a Form Four student from Amagoro in Teso North Sub‑County, has emerged top in a mathematics contest organized by Kiwimbi Kenya, walking away with an iPad worth Sh200,000 and Sh10,000 in cash.
Okisai, who studies at Maseno School, outperformed 114 other contestants drawn mainly from secondary schools in Amagoro and neighbouring areas. The one‑day competition, the first of its kind by the NGO, attracted wide participation and will now be held annually.
The contest featured six progressive levels, beginning with basic mathematics and culminating in advanced concepts. Participants scoring below 50 per cent in the early rounds were eliminated, while only 17 advanced to level six after meeting the 60 per cent threshold in level five.
In the final stage, 10 students competed for top honours. Okisai clinched victory with 66 per cent, scoring 33 out of 54 marks in the determinant test. The runner‑up scored 27 marks and received a tablet and Sh5,000, while the third‑placed contestant was awarded a smartphone and Sh4,000. Other finalists between sixth and tenth positions received cash prizes and certificates.

Speaking during the event, Kiwimbi Kenya founder Prof. Olubayi Olubayi said the competition is designed to strengthen mathematical skills and prepare learners for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). “The contest identifies mathematical talent and nurtures future innovators who will drive Africa’s industrialisation,” he said.
The top five students were later hosted for dinner by Teso North MP Dr Oku Kaunya in recognition of their achievement.
Okisai credited his success to frequent use of the Kiwimbi community library, where he has been an avid reader since primary school.
Kiwimbi Kenya runs a daily community library, a computer laboratory, vocational training programmes for women and youth, a Teso cultural museum, and education, agro‑nutrition and mentorship initiatives in Amagoro.
