The incoming County Commissioner (CC), Nwachaunga Chaunga, has sent a stern warning to politicians who use students during this long December holiday to cheer them and also disrupt their opponents’ meetings.
He said that the youth are innocent people whose energy can easily destroy anything unless harnessed for beneficial purposes.
“These are our children who need to be guided well and embrace values like respect for others instead of misusing them for selfish reasons, ” he said.
The Commissioner who addressed the public during this year’s Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Mobamba Secondary School in Nyarubari Masaba Constituency, asked parents to be near their children at all times and discourage them from indulging in bad company that is brought through peer influence, which leads them to vices like drug abuse, child defilement and gambling.
Saying the Kisii is known as a peaceful and industrious region, he asked parents to involve their older children in lighter work, such as helping pick tea, weeding banana plants, and taking care of the cows, to break the monotony of books and holiday school assignments.
Saying that students spend more time at school than at home with their parents, he asked parents to use the holiday to teach their sons and daughters meaningful life skills, such as thatching granary roofs, making cooking sticks for boys, cooking, and arranging the house for girls.
The Commissioner caused light moments to the crowd when he asked parents not to be surprised when they get their daughters washing chopped sukunma week with soap before cooking them and advised them to be the best educators of their children in all aspects of life.
