Rongo University Student Mercy Chelang’at has finally broken her silence after a video of her borrowing a graduation gown to impress her family and friends went viral, sparking widespread conversation online.

The young student has now opened up about the emotional and financial pressures that pushed her into the act, issuing a heartfelt apology to the public.

Chelang’at explained that she has been quietly battling a heavy fee burden and mounting emotional stress, circumstances that left her feeling trapped and desperate.

Unable to graduate due to outstanding fees, she borrowed a gown in an attempt to avoid disappointing her loved ones who believed she had completed her studies.

“I have been struggling with fees and emotional stress for a long time. I felt trapped, ashamed, and overwhelmed. Instead of asking for help, I let desperation mislead me. I am deeply sorry,” she said in her emotional statement.

She clarified that the incident did not reflect her true character but rather the breaking point of a young woman weighed down by circumstances beyond her control.

“I am not a bad person, just a young woman who broke under pressure. I take full responsibility, and I am ready to make things right.”

“I kindly ask for your understanding, prayers, and support as I try to rebuild and correct this situation. Thank you to everyone who has shown kindness during this difficult moment.”

She revealed that she currently has a fee balance of Ksh79,000, which has prevented her from graduating. Chelang’at is now appealing to well-wishers to help her clear the arrears so she can resume her studies and officially complete her degree.

The viral video has drawn mixed reactions, with many Kenyans expressing sympathy and calling for financial assistance to help her get back on track.

Her story has opened up a broader conversation about the pressures facing university students, especially those from financially challenged backgrounds.
