As the Kenya Secondary School Certificate of Education (KCSE) candidates step into their second week, it did not augur well for one family in Nyacheki village, whose son will be missing in action because of sudden death.

Peter Sukuru, 19, of Sugubo Secondary School, collapsed on Friday and died shortly after sitting for his morning session examination paper.

According to his colleagues, they had just come out of the examination room and were moving to bask in the sun when he collapsed.

“We thought he was joking, but when we tried to lift him, he did not respond,” said one of the candidates.

They reported the incident to the Deputy Principal of the school, who rang the Principal and as they rushed the affected boy to Nyacheki Sub-county hospital, where he was pronounced dead before receiving any treatment.

His stunned elder sister, who spoke to Education News, told their parents to remain calm as she had reported the matter to the police for investigation.

“I request my patients to gather courage and withstand this bitter death, and give the police a chance to investigate,” she said.

The father of the deceased, who identified himself as John Sukuru, described his son as a disciplined and calm, promising young man.

“My son has never experienced any ailment since he was born, but now death has snatched him unexpectedly,” he said.

The concerned father asked for a quick police investigation and to establish the cause of the death of his son.

The body was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for autopsy pending further police investigations and plans for burial.
