Marakwet West MP Kipchumba Toroitich has expressed concern over the uneven surrender of firearms among communities in the North Rift region.
Toroitich noted that while residents in the Marakwet area have surrendered over 200 firearms, neighbouring regions such as Tiaty and West Pokot have only handed in a few.
“We appreciate the progress made on our side, but the low surrender rates in neighbouring areas are worrying,” said Toroitich. “This imbalance threatens ongoing peace efforts and creates mistrust among communities.”
Speaking in the area, the MP warned that such laxity jeopardises peace and stability, noting that the continued possession of illegal firearms raises questions about the intentions of their holders.
He urged local leaders in the affected regions to encourage their communities to surrender weapons, emphasising that peace must remain the top priority.
“Leaders must take the lead in preaching peace and urging full disarmament. Without mutual trust, lasting peace will remain elusive,” he added.

As of October 7, 2025, a total of 282 illegal firearms, 2,039 rounds of ammunition, and one rifle grenade have been surrendered in the North Rift. The latest recovery followed a resident’s surrender of an AK-47 rifle on October 6.
The disarmament drive is part of “Operation Rudisha Bunduki”, a multi-agency initiative aimed at promoting peace and stability through sustained community engagement and voluntary surrender.
Meanwhile, church leaders from the region have called for the empowerment of youth who return weapons, saying the move would help them abandon criminal activities and rebuild their lives.
“These young people need to see that peace pays,” said one cleric. “Empowering them with skills and livelihoods will ensure they don’t go back to violence.”
