All Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries will spearhead the tree planting drive in their respective primary schools countrywide during the October 10, Mazingira Day Celebration.
The celebration which will be coordinated by the Ministry of environment, climate change and forestry
is running under the theme: “Criterion Centre Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”

,the Basic Education PS Prof Bitok has been asked to help in the direction to make sure primary schools tree planting activity during the celebrationis a success.
According PS Mugambi, the celebrations will adopt a dual model whereby the national celebration in Trans-Nzoia County will be led by the President and Sub-location level Celebrations.
“The committee has recommended that the celebration activities involve planting of fruit tree seedlings in Primary Schools and cleaning up of identified markets/conservation sites nearby, under the rallying call “Turudi Primo Tukadonate Fruit Trees na Kuclean Environment”. All Kenyans and other stakeholders are being requested to retreat back to their Primary Schools to donate and plant a fruit seedling as well as participate in clean-up activities.” Mugambi said.
He added that, while build-up activities shall be undertaken in all Primary Schools, the actual Mazingira Day Celebrations will take place in selected Primary Schools in each Sub-location countrywide, coordinated by Assistant Chiefs.

The CS’s and PS’s will lead alumni of their respective schools on environmental stewardship activities and other relevant undertakings. We are targeting to raise at least 2000 fruit tree seedlings per Primary School.
The schools are therefore directed to identify and mobilize its alumni to participate in build-up activities and Mazingira Day Celebrations, allow the alumni and stakeholders to access primary schools for build-up activities for a period of seven (7) days starting from 3rd October, 2025. During this period, the alumni, stakeholders and other interested Kenyans may visit the schools to donate, plant fruit tree seedlings and also participate in clean-up activities.
School managements are also asked to prepare planting sites, commit to care and maintain the planted seedlings or preserve them where growing conditions are unfavourable till such a time when planting is possible.
In the event that a school has no sufficient land to allow for planting of all donated seedlings, the excess be given to pupils for planting in their homes.
To make the event a success, the education officials at the counties are encouraged to collaborate with the National Government Administration Officials (NGAOs) in identification of favourable schools/sites for the celebrations and plan accordingly.
The involvement of schools is central to the success of Mazingira Day 2025, not only as venues for the celebrations but also as custodians of the planted fruit tree seedlings that will contribute to food security, nutrition and environmental restoration.
