Saseta Girls Secondary School has become the latest institution in Bomet County to shut its doors indefinitely following student unrest, bringing the number of affected schools in the region to seven in just one week.
Tensions reportedly flared at Saseta after students refused to sit for scheduled examinations, prompting fears of potential property destruction.
In an emergency meeting, the school administration made the decision to send students home indefinitely in fear of student unrest.
“We had no choice but to close the school to ensure the safety of both students and school property,” said a senior school official who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. “The atmosphere was quickly deteriorating, and we had to act fast.”
Saseta Girls now joins a growing list of institutions temporarily shut down due to unrest, including Longisa, Boito, Koiwa, Kamungei, and Chebonei Girls.
The wave of closures has sparked concern among education stakeholders in the county, with many calling for urgent and coordinated intervention.

“We cannot continue watching our schools close one after another,” said Joyce Kirui, a local education official. “This is a worrying trend, and we must find out what’s driving these disruptions.”
Parents and community leaders are also urging the government to launch a thorough investigation into the root causes of the unrest, amid speculation over issues ranging from exam pressure to administrative grievances.
“There needs to be a serious conversation between teachers, students, parents, and the ministry,” said Mrs. Teresia Langat, a parent representative. “We must restore discipline, but we also need to listen to what the students are saying.”
County education officials have appealed for cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure schools remain peaceful and conducive for learning. Pressure is also mounting on the Ministry of Education to respond with a clear action plan to prevent further disruptions.
