Bomet University College (BUC) new Sigor Campus has taken a significant step in boosting its transport capacity with the acquisition of a brand-new bus.

The vehicle, officially received this week, is expected to greatly improve transport services for students and staff during academic trips, sporting activities, and community outreach programmes.

The purchase of the bus comes at a time when the campus is experiencing rapid growth in student numbers and expanding its academic offerings.

In an interview with the administrators, they said the vehicle would help ease logistical challenges and enhance learning experiences beyond the classroom by facilitating fieldwork, industrial visits and inter-campus travel.

Sigor Campus was established on the grounds of the former Sigor Boys High School, which was closed to pave the way for the development of the university campus.

The transformation has been hailed as a milestone in expanding access to higher education in Bomet County and across the South Rift region.

University officials noted that this development demonstrates BUC’s long-term commitment to bring higher education closer to rural communities and to spur local economic growth.

More than 500 students, most of them from the School of Agriculture relocated to the Sigor Campus at the start of the September semester.

The influx of students has increased demand for improved facilities, including transport.

Administrators added that the bus would provide a safer, more affordable, and reliable means of travel for academic and co-curricular activities, reducing the costs and logistical challenges faced by students.

Local leaders welcomed the development, noting that the presence of the university and its continued investment in infrastructure are already creating new opportunities for businesses.

They expressed optimism that the strengthened link between the university and the surrounding community would foster innovation, skills development, and outreach programmes benefiting both students and residents.

Sigor Boys High School has since moved to Mismis location for third-term studies, ensuring continuity in secondary education even as the university campus takes root.

Officials said more investments are expected in the coming months to upgrade facilities, introduce new programmes, and continue building the campus into a centre of excellence for higher learning in the region.
