A total of 883 schools across Kenya are staring at a financial crisis after they submitted data in the wrong format to the Ministry of Education, the mistake which put them at risk of missing out on government capitation funds, which are critical in running day-to-day school operations.
The Ministry has revealed, insisting that unless these institutions re-submit their data using the correct templates, they will not receive capitation.
The affected schools spread across all 46 counties and include 150 Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), 370 primary schools, and 363 secondary schools.
According to the ministry, several schools provided inaccurate learner assessment numbers, incorrect NEMIS UIC codes, and wrong enrolment figures. Others failed to use the official data capture templates, leading to rejection of their submissions.

The most affected counties are Kericho 55, Nandi 54, Kisii 52 Makueni 48, West Pokot 47 Machakos 44 Homa Bay 42 Nakuru 42 schools.
However other counties like Nairobi City (1), Wajir (5), and Lamu (6 schools) reported very low numbers of institutions affected.
This comes after the MoE rolled out the review of the schools and the number of students to curb the frequent loses of fund after the Auditor General revealed that the ministry loses millions to ghost schools through capitation.
However this has affected many schools struggling with lack of funds to run the school activities, many have submitted their forms for verification with 3000 already with the money.
