Kwanthanze, Cheptil crowned volleyball champions at FEASSSA Games

Kwanthanze Queens celebrate with joy after lifting record eighth FEASSSA volleyball crown, as Cheptil reclaim boys’ title.

Kenya once again underlined its dominance in school volleyball as Kwanthanze Secondary School and Cheptil High School clinched the girls’ and boys’ volleyball titles, respectively, at the Federation of East African Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games in Kakamega County.

For the girls, Kwanthanze cemented their place in history by lifting a record-extending eighth FEASSSA title after staging a spirited comeback against compatriots and perennial rivals Kesogon Mixed Secondary School.

The national champions came from a set down to win 3–1 in sets (23–25, 25–22, 25–13, 25–18), completing a season double after also defeating Kesogon in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two Games earlier this month.

The victory handed Kwanthanze the sole ticket to represent Africa at the World Secondary Schools Sports Games, a feat last achieved in 2019.

Their latest triumph restored their regional dominance after Kesogon disrupted their winning streak between 2022 and 2024.

Head coach Justin Kigwari could not hide his pride in his team’s tactical discipline and resilience.

“We played according to our game plan. We perfected blocking, setting, and receiving, and that made the difference. Kesogon have been a great side over the last three years, but we had to show who the real queens of volleyball are,” he said.

On his part, Kesogon coach John Marani, whose side had ended Kwanthanze’s dominance in previous years, admitted his team was second best on the day.

“This year, we were not up to standard. Our players lacked experience, and we couldn’t match Kwanthanze in key areas. We hope to rebuild and come back stronger next year,” said Marani.

In the boys’ final, Kenya’s Cheptil High School reclaimed the regional crown they last won in 2022, edging out Namugongo Secondary School of Uganda in a pulsating five-set thriller. Cheptil survived a late scare to seal a 3–2 victory, proving their pedigree at the East African stage.
