Former Chief Executive Officer of Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, Dr. Enock Ondari has urged medical students who have completed their training to mentor and nurture the next generation aspiring to join the medical field.
Speaking to students of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Nyamache branch, in Kisii County on Sunday during a courtesy visit, Dr. Ondari stressed the importance of the profession, noting that it deals directly with human life and requires utmost dedication.
“The career of treating and caring for the sick is unique. You can only succeed if you have a true calling from God. Those who join it merely for employment often end up making mistakes,” he said.
He appealed to the Kisii County Government to equip Nyamache Sub-county Hospital with adequate medical tools to facilitate effective training for students.

Noting that the facility has been operational for a long time, he lamented its poor infrastructure and lack of essential treatment equipment. He urged Kisii Governor Simba Arati to consider elevating the hospital to Level 5 status to serve as a referral centre for KMTC students from neighbouring areas.
According to Dr. Ondari, the hospital requires more facilities, including microscopes, theatre machines, beds, and expanded space for students to conduct practical lessons and attend to patients.
On the ongoing strike by nurses in Kisii County, Dr. Ondari called on the government to urgently engage the striking health workers to resolve their grievances and restore services.
The chairperson of the striking nurses, Evans Onkenge, said they will not resume duty unless the county government increases their salaries, effect long-overdue promotions, and improve their general working conditions.
