The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants cancer declared a national disaster, citing the increasing toll the disease is taking on Kenyan families.
KNUT Nandi branch Secretary James Tallam said such a declaration would mobilize more resources and national attention to fight the disease.
“Cancer has claimed countless lives and devastated numerous households across the country,” said Tallam. “Declaring it a national disaster will allow for better coordination and more focused efforts in combating this menace.”
Speaking in Kaplelmet, he noted that the cost of cancer treatment is beyond the reach of many ordinary Kenyans, leaving families to suffer both emotionally and financially.

“Many patients are forced to sell property just to afford treatment, and in some cases, entire families are left impoverished,” he explained. “This is a crisis, and it cannot be ignored any longer.”
The union official, who personally battles diabetes and had one of his legs amputated, spoke passionately about the need for urgent action.
“I speak from experience. Chronic illnesses not only drain the patient but also the family. Cancer is doing the same, if not worse,” Tallam said.
He also decried the insufficient funding allocated to cancer treatment and prevention programs, saying it continues to hamper efforts by health facilities and communities alike.

“The government must step up and increase investment in cancer care. We need more screening centers, affordable treatment, and access to medication,” he emphasized.
Tallam further underscored the importance of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), encouraging Kenyans to enroll, regardless of their financial status.
“UHC is a lifeline. I urge every Kenyan to take advantage of it because health issues can strike when least expected,” he added.
KNUT has vowed to continue advocating for better healthcare policies and support systems to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Kenyan citizens.
