Kakamega County schools delivered a commanding performance at the Western Region Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games, securing multiple titles and earning qualification for the national championships set to be hosted in Kakamega later this month.
The standout performers included Musingu High School, whose football team, the Scorpions, clinched the boys’ title with a 2–0 win over Vihiga’s Ebwali Secondary School. In the girls’ category, Butere Girls retained their dominance with a strong showing that saw them crowned regional champions.
Kakamega also dominated in rugby, basketball, volleyball, and netball. St. Peter’s Mumias and Koyonzo Boys led in boys’ rugby, while Mwira Girls and Eregi Girls qualified in the girls’ division. Butere Girls and St. Peter’s Mumias also secured national slots in basketball, and volleyball giants Malava Boys and Bishop Sulumeti Lugari Girls earned victories in their respective categories. Mukuyu Secondary School made a notable impact in netball.

The results highlight Kakamega’s growing influence in secondary school sports and set the stage for what is expected to be a strong showing at the national championships, which will take place on home ground.
Governor Fernandes Barasa, speaking during the closing ceremony, lauded the teams for their discipline and competitive spirit.
“This success is not only a reflection of the hard work of our athletes and their coaches, but also a testament to our county’s commitment to nurturing sports talent at the grassroots level,” said Governor Barasa.
With the National KSSSA and the regional FEASSSA Games fast approaching, attention now shifts to how Kakamega’s teams will perform on the bigger stage — this time, buoyed by home support and familiar terrain.
Kakamega is expected to host teams from across the country and the East African region, further solidifying its role as a hub for school sports development in Kakamega.
