Wajir High School, one of the most prominent national boys’ secondary schools in northern Kenya, is set to mark its 60th anniversary in a grand celebration scheduled for Saturday,  July12 ,2025. The event will be held at the school’s main grounds in Wajir town under the theme “Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future.” This milestone, also referred to as the Diamond Jubilee, brings together students, alumni, teachers, parents, education leaders and national dignitaries to celebrate the institution’s impactful legacy.

Founded in 1965 under the stewardship of Principal H.A. Marshad, Wajir High School has grown from humble beginnings to become a centre of academic excellence in the region. For decades, it has played a crucial role in shaping the future of thousands of students, traditionally producing nearly half of the university entrants from the North Eastern region each year. It is renowned not only for its academic success but also for nurturing leadership, resilience, and discipline in its learners.

The 60th Anniversary celebrations will be graced by top government officials, with Health CS Aden Duale expected as the chief guest. Dignitaries, alumni from across the country, community elders, local leaders and education stakeholders are also expected  to attend. The event will begin at 9:00 AM and continue into the afternoon, featuring speeches, awards, exhibitions, entertainment and commemorative activities.

Under the leadership of current principal Kassim, Wajir High School has seen a steady resurgence both academically and structurally. The school’s KCSE mean score has improved  notably from a D+ to a C+, despite challenges like insecurity and infrastructure constraints in the past. The administration  has recently overseen major upgrades including dormitory renovations, installation of security, lighting and improved boarding facilities to enhance learning conditions.

As part of the Diamond Jubilee, the Wajir High Alumni Association is mobilizing resources to donate a school bus as their official contribution to the celebrations. This initiative reflects the deep sense of pride and responsibility that former students hold for their alma mater. The day’s events will include an alumni homecoming, an academic symposium, sporting competitions, facility launches and a special commemorative service.

Wajir High has also made a name in co-curricular excellence, especially in sports. The school was recently crowned champions in both soccer and basketball at the 2024 Wajir East Sub-County games. Such achievements showcase its holistic approach to education, balancing academics with character and physical development.
