The stage is set for the 2024 Nyanza Regional Games, which officially kick off this Thursday, June 10, according to Regional Secretary Tom Odhiambo. The multi-disciplinary school sports event is expected to draw hundreds of student-athletes from across the region, all vying for a coveted spot at the national championships.
All participating teams are required to report on Wednesday, with document verification exercises scheduled throughout the afternoon. Organisers have emphasised the importance of this process to ensure fairness and eligibility ahead of the competition.
A total of six disciplines will feature prominently in this year’s edition, including soccer, volleyball, basketball 3×3, netball, and rugby 7s. Several high-profile teams will return as defending champions, aiming to maintain their dominance on the regional stage.

In soccer, St. Alfred’s Alara leads the charge in the girls’ category, while Koderobara will be looking to hold onto their title in the boys’ competition. Volleyball champions Nyakongo (girls) and St. Joseph’s Nyabondo (boys) are also expected to mount strong title defences.
Basketball 3×3 will see Ng’iya and Onjiko return as the reigning champions in the girls’ and boys’ categories, respectively. In netball, Oyugi Ogango remains the team to beat after a commanding performance last season.
Rugby 7s promises fireworks, with both Yala and Nyakach holding championship titles and aiming to defend their positions amid stiff competition.
With regional pride and national qualification at stake, the Nyanza Regional Games are poised to deliver high drama, breakout talent, and unforgettable moments on the courts and fields. All eyes now turn to Thursday’s opening matches as the countdown begins.
