Albert Ojwang honored in Nairobi ahead of Friday burial

Hundreds of mourners gathered yesterday, Wednesday at Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi to pay their final respects to the late teacher and digital activist Albert Ojwang, whose death in police custody on June 7 ignited national outrage and calls for justice.

The church service, marked by emotion and calls for accountability, drew family members, friends, fellow educators, civil society leaders and a large contingent of youth who have been at the forefront of recent protests demanding police reform. Ojwang’s bronze-finished casket was ushered into the sanctuary shortly after 9:00 a.m., accompanied by gospel hymns and tearful tributes.
