St. Mark’s Obambo Secondary School has suffered a major blow after its volleyball team was disqualified from participating in the forthcoming Nyanza regional ball games.

In an official letter issued by the County Director of Education for Kisumu, Rosemary Birenge, the school was informed that its team had failed to meet the necessary online registration requirements, a procedural lapse that ultimately led to the disqualification.

“This office regrets to inform you that your volleyball team has been disqualified by the regional team from participating in the forthcoming Nyanza Regional Ball Games,” reads the communication dated July 1, 2025. “This is with regard to an online registration challenge.”

The letter, addressed to the principal of St. Mark’s Obambo and copied to the Sub-County Director of Education for Kisumu West, underscores the Ministry of Education’s growing emphasis on digital compliance in managing co-curricular activities.

The decision is likely to spark disappointment among students and staff at the school, which has previously been a competitive presence in regional tournaments. It also raises questions about the preparedness of schools in adapting to digitized systems for sports administration.

The directive was signed by Birenge, who also serves as the Sports Patron for the Kisumu chapter of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA).

Efforts to reach school Principal for comment were unsuccessful by press time.

As the Nyanza regional ball games draw near, the incident serves as a cautionary tale to other institutions on the importance of timely and accurate registration in an increasingly digital education environment.
