TSC withdraws teachers attached to CEMASTEA in shocking move

Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius K. Bitok directed CEMASTEA CEO Jacinta Akatsa to notify the affected tutors of the TSC’s plan to redeploy them ahead of the commencement of Term Three in August.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has formally requested that the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) notify its teaching staff about their impending transfer, following a directive by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to recall all 24 teachers currently deployed at the institution.

In a letter dated June 2025, Principal Secretary Prof. Julius K. Bitok directed CEMASTEA CEO Mrs Jacinta Akatsa to ensure the affected tutors are made aware of the Commission’s plan to redeploy them before the start of Term Three in August.

“The Commission informed us of their decision to recall the 24 teachers at CEMASTEA for appropriate deployment,” wrote Prof. Bitok, referencing a letter from the TSC dated May 27, 2025.

The Ministry’s letter adds a timeline to the process, noting that the TSC will either transfer the teachers’ services directly to CEMASTEA or deploy them to other stations across the country by August 28 2025, when the third term is scheduled to begin.

Prof Bitok requested that Akatsa support the process internally. “The purpose of this letter is to request you to formally bring this matter to the attention of the concerned tutors to facilitate a seamless transition,” he said.

The development raises questions about the future staffing of CEMASTEA, which has long relied on experienced TSC-seconded teachers to run its capacity-building programmes for mathematics and science educators across the country.

It remains unclear whether all 24 teachers will be posted elsewhere or retained under new terms at CEMASTEA.

Education unions and other sector players are expected to weigh in as the situation develops.
