Nairobi’s streets have once again become the stage for national anger and sorrow. This time, it’s over the shooting of university student Philip Oketch during Monday’s protests — and the disturbing footage of a street vendor being shot at close range on Moi Avenue.
By Tuesday morning, students from Kenyatta University had broken their silence. In a strongly worded memo, the Kenyatta University Students Association (KUSA) expressed deep anger, calling the attack on Oketch “another chapter in what they called ‘oppression by government through the police.’”
KUSA Secretary General Zadock Nyakwaka did not hold back, saying he condemned the incident “in the strongest terms possible” and vowed to stand with all those affected by the recent wave of violence.
The protests, which were initially sparked by the mysterious death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang in police custody, quickly escalated.
Then came the video clip that shocked the nation — footage showing two anti-riot police officers confronting a young street vendor selling face masks before one of them fired directly at his head.

The victim is currently admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital in critical condition, having undergone emergency brain surgery, according to Health Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth.
Across campuses and city blocks, Kenyans are demanding more than explanations or empty promises.
Demonstrations continue to grow, mostly led by frustrated youth who say they are tired of being victims — shot, beaten, or threatened — with no justice in sight.
“This country is ours, and Kenya is ours,” read the KUSA statement. “Let’s rise in its defence and defend the rule of law.”
That message, though born on a university campus, is now reverberating across the nation — a collective cry that could shape Kenya’s ongoing struggle for justice and meaningful police reforms.
