The education committee, led by Tindiret MP Julius Melly, has received outpouring accolades from the public and major education stakeholders for its oversight of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Since Melly took over as its chair, TSC no longer sleeps with both eyes closed as it did in the past.
Education News spoke to several stakeholders about the January promotion stalemate that has caused TSC to delay the release of promotion letters to successful teachers.
In leading the house committee to reject the exercise, Melly described the process as marred by corruption and glaring inconsistencies, thus not meeting the expected threshold. Many teachers believe the incoming TSC CEO will walk a tight rope as long as Hon Melly chairs the Education committee.
Many stakeholders agreed that gone are the days when the TSC CEO could fail to honour the Education committee’s summons and walk Scott free. Mr Melly has proved beyond reasonable doubt to be one of the serious Education committee chairs who understands how TSC works and is keen to ensure it sticks to its mandate.
Despite retiring next month, Dr Nancy Macharia is still running helter-skelter to piece up data requested by the committee on irregularities that, if not, we’ll defend (By Tsc), will likely quash the January promotions. The bone of contention is the promotion of over 5000 teachers who were barely six months old in one year job group.
