The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Bomet branch, has protested the prolonged disruption in medical services under the AON medical cover.

Assistant Executive Secretary Jones Bii revealed that teachers suffer due to unresolved issues between the insurer and health facilities.

Addressing the press, he said teachers referred to Tenwek Hospital have been turned away for the past 108 days due to a dispute with the service provider.

According to him, some teachers have had to sell personal belongings to get treatment. He noted that the union gave enough time to address the matter, but no tangible action has been taken.

Bii issued a 14-day ultimatum to relevant authorities to resolve the issue, warning that the union will convene and declare the next course of action should the stalemate persist.

“This has gone on for far too long. Some teachers have had to sell personal belongings to get treatment,” said Bii.

Teachers Joyce Birir and Faith Kilel also expressed frustration, saying they were referred to Tenwek from other hospitals only to be denied services.

The union has now proposed that medical allowances be incorporated into teachers’ payslips, allowing them the freedom to seek healthcare independently.

“We will not sit back and watch teachers suffer. It’s time for a sustainable and transparent solution. We gave enough time for this matter to be addressed, but no tangible action has been taken,” added Bii.
