TSC CEO shoes too wide to fit for many contestants as application deadline nears

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia who exited office yesterday.

Following the expiry of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO’s term, as stipulated in the TSC Act, the commission last week advertised the position. The deadline for submission of applications is May 19.

Contrary to many expectations, the requirements stipulated in the advert have left many stakeholders and interested parties wondering. They all find the requirements to be rather too open, even for deputy principals and deputy headteachers.

According to Education News, the requirements include being a Kenyan citizen and holding a degree in Education from a university recognised in Kenya.

Additionally, the candidate must have at least ten years of experience in education administration, management, public administration, human resources, or financial management. They must also meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

Teachers and various union officials who spoke to Education News expressed concern over the possibility of individuals without a degree in Education, but with other requisite qualifications, being appointed. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has already raised strong objections after reviewing the requirements outlined in the advertisement.

As the application deadline approaches, Education News has learnt that prominent individuals within TSC and the public sector, including former teachers who turned to politics but were voted out, have so far tendered their applications in readiness to replace Dr Nancy Macharia.

Also, unions and associations like the Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) and the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) have urged teachers who meet the requirements to apply to increase their chances of being appointed.

It is expected that the politics of regional balancing will take centre stage in determining who becomes the leading employer in East and Central Africa.

Education News has already prepared an upcoming story on the top contenders for the seat. Rely on Education News for informed, accurate, timely, and reliable news on the TSC transition.
