Parents in the North Rift have demanded the timely release of capitation to schools to ensure smooth learning activities in the second term.

The parents stated that many students depend on the funds, and any delays would disenfranchise them.

Led by Jane Kikwai, they questioned why the government has been waiting until complaints are raised to release the money.

“Delayed capitation has been the order of the day for this government. Sadly, the government has been waiting until complaints rise to release the money,” she said.

Speaking in Kapsabet town, she also cautioned against slashing the funds, a move they say could trigger massive demonstrations in the country.

Kikwai said Education is a critical sector, so it should be well funded and managed to prevent its crumbling.

“Capitation is very important, and no school can run without it. As a result, we demand that this money be released on time. As parents, we also warn the government against slashing this money. Such a move will not be tolerated,” added Kikwai.

For her part, Florence Misik warned against politicizing Education, adding that the country’s education system should be strengthened to enable it to remain academically top in the region.

“Education is a vital sector and should not be politicized. We also ask that the education system be strengthened so that our country remains top academically in the region,” noted Misik.

The delayed release of capitation to schools has remained a major challenge, with teachers’ unions also blaming the government for not taking the matter seriously.
