KUPPET decries delayed salaries since June for intern teachers

Charles Ngeno addressing the press. KUPPET Narok branch has expressed dissatisfaction over the delayed payment of interns.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Narok branch has expressed dissatisfaction over the delayed payment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns in the county.

Branch Executive Secretary Charles Ngeno said that the teachers have not been paid for six months now, a situation he says has left them hopeless.

Speaking in Narok town, he said they have reports of teachers who have been evicted from their houses over rent arrears, which he says is shameful.

“We have teachers who recently filled forms to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. As we speak, those teachers have not been paid since June. We have teachers in Narok Central and Trans Mara who have not been paid. We want to tell TSC that it is not respectful to hire teachers and allow them stay for 6 months without salaries,” he noted.

He said that the teachers, most of whom have several dependents, are demoralized and are now living in fear resulting from accumulating huge debts.

Ngeno mentioned Narok West, Narok Central and Trans Mara sub-counties has having the highest number of unpaid teachers, a situation he termed as worrying and unacceptable.

“These teachers are interns and they are going through a lot of challenges. Many teachers have sent us messages informing us that they have been locked out of their houses for being unable to pay rent, landlords no longer trust them. Some have borrowed money, promising to repay upon getting salaries the following week or month but as we speak, they have no face now. They have lost honour because TSC is failing them,” added Ngeno.

The Union now wants the monies released immediately, adding that the teachers play a crucial role hence should not be frustrated.

This comes days after the government, through TSC, hired 46,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, with a promise to hire 20,000 more in January 2025.
