Residents of Bogiakumu and Bomwacha villages in Bonchari constituency, Kisii county have raised alarm over the high rate of school dropouts due to hunger in the area.

Led by area Nyumba Kumi chairman Elijah Nyamweya, they blamed Chiefs and their Assistants for signing land-buying agreements before evaluating if the seller left behind enough land for food cultivation to feed their families.

“Some people from here have sold their whole pieces of land and have nowhere to plant food crops for their families and this forces children to skip go to school with empty stomachs or leads them to steal produce from people’s farms,” he said.

Nyamweya, who spoke at a baraza on Tuesday, asked Kisii County Commissioner to probe the irresponsible Chiefs.

He called on the Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir to visit primary schools in the area and witness the almost empty classrooms because children do not report to school over poor home conditions characterized with food shortage, quarreling families and unstable homes due to irresponsible sale of land.

Nyamweya called on residents to practice responsible sale of land and asked churches and other community organisations to sensitize residents regarding the same, adding that without collective input, the matter together with teenage pregnancies and excessive consumption of illicit beer were gradually impoverishing the residents.
