Maasai Mara, VAAL University strengthen ties in collaborative activities

Maasai Mara University (MMARAU) and VAAL University of Technology (VUT) are planning a leadership and governance training for women leaders in higher education.

This came to light when the varsity Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Peninah Abudho welcomed a delegation from VUT led by Deputy VC Prof. Christa Grobbler.

Prof. Abudho noted that the programme is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) the two institutions signed in 2022.

She said that the two institutions are also developing environmental conservation measures to counter effects of climate change.

“This is one of the most vibrant MoUs done in Africa and this collaboration will be fruitful and add common value to the community,” she said.

Prof. Grobbler said that the MoU will assist Africans to develop each other’s competencies and respond to problems affecting community and environment.

She said that it will also ensure capacity building and research outputs that will benefit students, staff and the community.

Grobbler mentioned that they have over 30 joint publications so far.

Dr. Wesley Omwoyo, Senior Lecturer at MMARAU and link Scientist between the two universities, said that the collaboration started in 2017 and culminated into 2022 MoU signing in South Africa.

Dr. Omwoyo said that the MoU consisted of several activities including post-doctoral fellowships for MMARAU staff led by him in 2018-2020, Dr. Catherine Kifworo (2023-2024) and Dr. Justus Wesonga (2023-2024).

He pointed out that and there are several post-graduate students who have been supported by the MoU to get PhD and Masters degrees as well.
