A memorial mass for the 21 learners from Hillside Academy in Endarasha, who tragically lost their lives in a dormitory fire, will be held next week at Mweiga Stadium.
This announcement was made by the Acting Central Region Commissioner and Nyeri County Commissioner, Pius Murugu, following a meeting with key stakeholders.
The meeting established a county-level committee, chaired by Commissioner Murugu and Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga, to oversee funeral arrangements.
A sub-county committee, headed by Kieni West District Commissioner Agnes Shadrack, will also assist in coordinating events at the local level.
Commissioner Murugu explained that the primary goal of these committees is to ensure that the memorial and burial processes run smoothly and that normal school activities resume for the remaining students.
“We expect the memorial mass to take place next week, as the DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) is expected to conclude DNA analysis and identification of the bodies by the end of this week,” he said.
He noted that the government has pledged to cover all funeral expenses, including transportation of the bodies to their respective homes after the mass. Additionally, the government will support the two students still receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Murugu also confirmed that the dormitory, where the tragic fire occurred, has been handed back to the school management for reconstruction, following the completion of investigations by government agencies.
He noted that they are now awaiting the final fire investigation report from the DCI after receiving preliminary findings from various agencies involved in the inquiry.
“Classes will resume immediately after the burial of the 21 learners, ensuring that those scheduled to sit for their KEPSEA exams can proceed without further disruption,” Murugu concluded.
